This sound art installation was inspired by the small holes left from the wood borer (beetles and larvae) which are often seen on dead or decaying trees. Curious about their ecology and prompted by the visual similarity between the borer’s round tunnels and the common headphone socket used on portable electronic devices, I wondered what it would be like to plug into their dark world. This installation therefore plays with that question by fitting headphone inputs into the wood to provoke a fun and imaginative sonic exploration into the unseen world of these insects. The soundscapes heard through headphones are produced by manipulated field recordings fused with warped audio samples to create an immersive and suggestive soundtrack of the subject.
